READING, PA, August 31, 2024 — Three Berks County authors offer lively reading presentations and writing-related Q&A sessions and workshops, at the invitation of the West Lawn / Wyomissing Hills Library. Free and open to the community, ages 12 to adult.

Short story and novel author LD Zane, a Navy veteran, will read two published works, “Kintsugi” and “Wooden Statements,” at the West Lawn/Wyomissing Hills Library on Tuesday, September 10 from 5:30 to 7:30 PM. The focus of this event – free to the community – is on writing creative nonfiction and flash fiction. As just one of several in the Library’s local WriteFest Week, this presentation is designed to both inform and inspire library patrons and audience members to write, read, and enjoy literature. An interactive Q&A will follow, at which time the author will answer questions about the difference between fiction and creative nonfiction, plus offer practical tips about getting published in literary magazines.

Questions from the audience might include:

What is flash fiction? How many words qualify? How can so much be packed into one piece of writing? Can I sell and/or publish such a short piece?

What exactly is creative nonfiction? Should I avoid using real names when writing creative nonfiction? How did the author create fake names and locations of real places?

Zane’s first anthology of short stories, It’s Always My Fault, will be available for purchase and signing by the author. A portion of proceeds benefit the author’s chosen nonprofit charity: Veterans Making a Difference. This book was published in 2020 by Pretzel City Press LLC in Leesport, and is available online at Amazon.com as well as Treasures Gift Shoppe at 14128 Kutztown Rd., Fleetwood.

Later in the week, on Friday, September 13 from 12 noon to 1:30 PM, published authors Anthony Maize and Janice E. Rodriguez will each read a short story with a spooky Friday-the-13th feeling, also at West Lawn/Wyomissing Hills Library. A Writing Workshop for the audience will follow, open to anyone interested in trying their hand at writing. Authors will answer questions about writing and publishing in this genre.

Readings include Maize’s “The Arlington Club,” inspired by the old Elks Lodge / Trexler Mansion currently being renovated by the Shuman Development Company in downtown Reading, Pa. Maize’s first anthology, The Arlington Club & Other Short Stories, published in 2023, will be available for purchase and signing. A percentage of proceeds benefit his chosen nonprofit, The Salvation Army of Reading.

Janice Rodriguez will read “Best Served Cold,” a humorous and engaging story with a chilly and unexpected ending, first published in the Evening Street Review, Spring 2019. Rodriguez will also briefly preview her upcoming novel, Ruby Moyer’s Pineapple Upside-Down Life, expected in November 2024.

LOCATION OF EVENTS: West Lawn/Wyomissing Hills branch of the Berks County Library System is located at 101 Woodside Ave., West Lawn. Tel. 610. 678.4888
